Best Times by Grass Type
St. Augustine
Optimal: April through early September
Best months: April, May, early June
Acceptable: March (with risk), July-August (aggressive watering required)
Avoid: October through February
Bermuda
Optimal: May through August
Best months: Late May, June, July
Acceptable: April, early September
Avoid: October through March (Bermuda is dormant)
Zoysia
Optimal: Late April through August
Best months: May, June
Note: Zoysia establishes slower—give it extra time before summer heat or winter
Month-by-Month Guide
🟢 May-June: BEST for All Grass Types
Warm soil, regular rainfall, long days for growth. Ideal conditions for root establishment before summer stress.
🟡 April, July-August: Good with Precautions
April: Possible late frosts in Montgomery County. July-August: Requires aggressive watering due to heat.
🟠 September: Risky but Possible
Early September OK for St. Augustine. Grass needs 6-8 weeks to establish before first frost.
🔴 October-March: Not Recommended
Warm-season grasses are dormant. Sod won't root properly and may not survive winter.
Emergency Installations
Sometimes you must install sod at a non-ideal time. If so:
- Choose the most cold-hardy variety (Raleigh St. Augustine)
- Water appropriately—not too much in cool weather
- Don't fertilize until spring green-up
- Accept higher risk of failure
